about
Spicilegium

Spicilegium is an English online-journal of the Japan Society for Medieval European Studies (JSMES). The journal is published once a year, and its first volume appeared in 2017. It is open to contributions in all fields studying Medieval Europe (history, literature, philosophy, art, music and other fields) approximately from the fifth century to the fifteenth century.

JSMES, founded on 1 April 2009, is devoted to the medieval European studies in the broadest sense of the term whereby Byzantine, Islamic, Late Antiquity and Early Modern studies may also be included. Its Japanese Journal Seiyo Chusei Kenkyu (Medieval European Studies), edited separately from Scipilegium, is published annually and is received by all the members of the Society. The membership is open to professional researchers, postgraduate students, and non-professional researchers.

Guidelines for Submissions

Spicilegium welcomes articles on any medieval topic. Submission of articles for publication is not restricted to JSMES members. Translations (into English) and critical editions of medieval texts are also acceptable if accompanied with an introductory essay. Contributions should not be under review for publication by another journal at the time of submission. There is no fixed deadline for submission, but it is advised that the article be submitted to the editors by the end of the year if it is to be considered for publication in the next year’s volume. The length of the article should normally be no more than 12,000 words but a longer article with an appendix or a shorter note is also acceptable.

Manuscripts should be double-spaced (including quoted matter and footnotes) with 12 pt fonts. With matters regarding documentation style, the Spicilegium Style Sheet should be consulted. Spicilegium uses a double-blind review process. Please remove all references to your identity as author from the main text and notes. It is the responsibility of the author to have the manuscript proofread for style and grammatical accuracy before submission.

On submission, illustrations and charts should be inserted at appropriate places in the manuscript. After the article is accepted for publication, the author is asked to provide them as separate digital files (jpg format preferred). Authors are responsible for obtaining any permissions for reproducing them. Non-English quotations should be accompanied by translations in English in parenthesis following the quotation or in the notes.

An Abstract of up to 150 words should be submitted separately once the article is accepted for publication.

Articles should be submitted to the editors as both Microsoft Word and pdf files by e-mail to: info@spicilegium.net Please state your name, affiliation, and contact e-mail address in the covering letter.

The editorial board, seeking advice of specialist reviewers when necessary, will normally reach a decision on publication within four months of receipt.
